The Hourglass Ensemble features leading soloists and chamber musicians from Sydney, focusing on commissioned Australian and other contemporary chamber music. Playing with unique honesty and spirit, they specialise in combining woodwind, strings, piano and voice in unique groupings.

The Silence of Thousands by Andrew Kennedy (Sydney) is a surreal story of the experience of passengers on a cruise ship when a man leaps overboard in the night time, in the middle of the ocean. The captain turns the boat around and stops all the engines, asking for total quiet to find the man among the moonlit waves. The music explores the atmosphere and feeling of many people all standing hushed and expectant together, and also the mindset of the man both before and after he performs a rash action.

Margaret Tesch-Muller (Brisbane), inspired by the splendour of wintry Scotland and the relation of seasons of a year to the passage of time in a relationship, has written Voices of a Northern Year featuring poetry by New Zealand poet Katharine Mansfield. From the thrill of meeting and springtime, to the languid happy summers of love, and finally icy fogs at the end of a partnership.

Also enjoy the iconic Trio of Brahms, the virtuosic and beguiling Flute Sonata of Australian Carl Vine, and the effervescent jazzy vibes of American Michael Torke’s Telephone Book.
